Breathwork Technique Classes
Techniques to take away beyond your stay in Uluwatu
Our resident breathwork practitioner Syddarta believes in using breathwork to achieve profound self-transformation on both physical and mental planes, “by simply practicing our most basic instinct to survive”. Trained and certified in multiple breathing disciplines, he’s able to customize each classbased on participants’ experience and personal needs. In his deeply cathartic sessions you will learn how to fast track yourself into a deep meditational state through your breath. The teachings and their transformative powers don’t stop at the shala. Sy’s breathwork toolkit can be applied to everyday life and integrated into your routine, “[enabling] you to outperform yourself every day.”
A DIY Therapy
Our resort brings contrast therapy to Uluwatu, Bali
The Asa Maia’s 21st century take on this ancient healing practice is a luxury wet therapy version, courtesy of our subterranean 7.5°C cold and 40°C hot pools. The cadence and timing of each hot-cold session is important, as is keeping sufficiently hydrated. We recommend starting the therapy with heat and concluding with cold (unless you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis). Alternate between spending two minutes in the hot pool, followed by 60 seconds in the cold pool. This sequence should be repeated 3-6 times over a duration of 20-30 minutes. If you would prefer some professional guidance, our resident contrast therapist Sy is available for coaching sessions.
Pilates
Learn how to strengthen your core with confidence
A low-impact exercise focused on building core strength, balance and flexibility, pilates is suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. By engaging the entire body, no muscle group is overlooked or underused. Not only can the practice stabilize your core, but it can improve body awareness, support postural alignment and bolster bone density as well. Best of all, the movements exert minimal stress on your joints. Our in-house pilates instructor and Uluwatu adoptee Daniela is a trained sports scientist from Brazil who’s coached professional dancers and surfers. Meanwhile, The Asa Maia’s more challenging Cadillac pilates classes are led by Daniela: a multi-talented therapist who also practices Thai Yoga Massage and Myofascial Release Therapy.
Types of Yoga
Choose a class according to your mood and energy
Our practices incorporate four main types of yoga that touch on everything from mindful movement to chakra balancing. A slower-paced session combining balance and strength-building holding poses, Hatha is a grounding style of yoga. The ancient healing practice of Kundalini, meanwhile, is designed to awaken your divine energy through a combination of breath (pranayama), mudras (hand movements), chanting and meditation. For a more aerobic and dynamic practice, we invite you to try Vinyasa, during which sequences flow from pose to pose with synchronized breathing. Focused breathwork is also a hallmark of Yin yoga. Rooted in Taoist teachings, asanas are held for anywhere from two seconds to five minutes to target your deeper connective tissues and fascia.
