The Asa Maia’s continued commitment to sustainable living and lessening our burden on the environment is enshrined in our founding principles. We invite our guests to join us on this ethical journey…
Upheld by real action
Mindful Sustainability
Eco Responsibility are words we live by
Not just empty promises, our eco ethos is upheld by real action. From edible rice straws to bamboo toothbrushes, the smallest of details have been given “the green touch.” Our gladaks’ refillable bathroom amenities are by biodegradable Balinese beauty brand Sensatia Botanicals, whilst our Turkish towels are organic and handmade. We champion sustainable materials like ceramic, linen and rattan, and have banned all single-use plastic in the hotel since day one. The Asa Maia also supports several community-run initiatives that are tackling plastic use and pollution, and we regularly partake in local beach clean-ups.
Reduce waste from the outset
Organic Waste Management
Waste not want not
Ever-conscious of lightening our ecological footprint, we’ve resolved to reduce waste from the outset - a philosophy that extends from The Asa Maia’s kitchen to the spa. To that end, we’ve introduced food peelings to some recipes, reduced cooking time and are mindful of serving reasonable but not oversized food portions. The hotel’s proud to partner with Urban Compost Bali, who transform our organic waste into high quality fertile compost, thus bypassing methane and CO2-producing landfill. A circular economy, it’s used in our onsite kitchen and herb garden, with any surplus donated to Urban Compost Bali’s community garden.
Predominantly indigenous materials
Upcycling Materials
Reusing and recycling unloved and disused materials is part of our design DNA
We’ve strived to create a sanctuary that’s not only beautiful, but gentle on the planet too as part of our eco responsibility. As well as using predominantly indigenous materials in the build, around 90% of the Asa Maia’s wood has been reclaimed. As sustainable storytellers, we believe in granting second lives to abandoned but perfectly good materials, and reworking pre-loved scrap wood destined for dumpsters into everything from chairs to clothes hangers! As for our hand-crafted bamboo roofs, not only is this fast-growing wild grass a sustainable and renewable alternative to timber, but it holds cultural and spiritual symbolism on the island. Each religious rite in Bali involves bamboo in some shape or form.
Safely remove impurities
Reverse Osmosis
Our eco responsibility extends to the water you drink
You’re probably familiar with the adage “you are what you eat”, but what about “you are what you drink?” The human body is 60% water after all. We use reverse osmosis (RO) to safely remove impurities from Uluwatu’s water supply. It works by harnessing pressure to force water molecules through an ultrafine synthetic material which captures and discards contaminants. Deemed the gold standard in removing unwanted particles like fluoride and arsenic which find their way into groundwater, it’s also more environmentally friendly. As well as being an eco-alternative to bottled water, RO produces one of the greenest wastewaters thanks to an absence of harmful chemicals like chlorine.
